I would like to start a foundation or other type organization to end the war on drugs. The #1 point to be made is that Drugs Don't Cause Addiction. Pain does. People in chronic pain chronically take pain relievers.
Dr. Lonny Shavelson in his book "Hooked" said that 70% of female heroin addicts had been sexually abused in childhood. We are making war on abused children. And then there is science. Addiction is a symptom of PTSD says Nobel Prize Winner in Medicine Eric Kandel in his book, "The Disordered Mind." Drugs fill receptors. What empties receptors (injury, PTSD) causes a desire for drugs. Drugs CAN'T cause addiction. Pass it on.
People in chronic pain are always being blamed for addiction, but didn't cause the overdose epidemic. They have, however, paid dearly for this narrative. I wish we'd stop blaming people for seeking treatment, and instead look at how we fail to care for those who need our help. Here's a little op-ed to help you with the numbers: https://www.nytimes.com/2023/12/24/opinion/pain-crisis-opioid-addiction.html
The opioid epidemic is caused by not allowing people with long term PTSD to be treated with drugs. People who need long term Drug treatment without an identifiable source of pain are called addicts. Doctors are not allowed to teat such people with drugs. -- There are no addicts. There are only people in pain. There are no recreational users. Only people relieving pain.
